Ksours and Kasbahs

The traditional habitat of the Draa Valley (Kasbah and Ksar) is the collective work of a harmonious society. It owes its existence to the economic, social, and cultural consistency of the palms groves.

The Ksar is an ancient fortified village ensuring maximum security for the population in a time of Siba (disobedience).

The Kasbah is distinguished from the Ksar by its smaller size. It is often inhabited by a patriarchal family, which provides security in economic issues, social structure and defence. The Draa Valley is home to hundreds of Kasbahs, the most famous being the Kasbah Caid Ali in Tamnougalt, the Kasbah Oulad Atmane, the Kasbah of N'koub and the Glaoui Kasbah in Zagora.
